Watchdog Logo
The Texas Observer requested the creation of an iconic logo to accompany the text Observer logo that reflected the investigative journalism magazine's image. The publication, founded by Molly Ivins, has long had a history of investigating stories on a micro level in order to protect the rights and expose the injustices endured by "the little guy." Molly was also known for her no BS approach in her interviews with congressmen and legislatures, embodying a stubborn bulldog, as "Give 'em hell!" was her motto. With Molly Ivins having this sense of prowess, The Observer eventually began to be known for its "watchdog journalism." This inspired the idea to utilize a watchdog as a centerpiece for the design. Creating a dog to really embody a "watchdog" was quite a challenge, as they are typically thought of as mean. To avoid this, it was essential to illustrate a dog with the pride of a guard but show gentleness. The perspective of the watchdog became especially important to achieve this.
